What happened in Hayti, Missouri? Why did worship attendance jump from an average of 22 during the first 6 months of 2011 to 33 during the last 6 months of the year? And why has it continued to grow showing an average worship attendance of 38 so far this year? What happened? Quite frankly, SERVE2011 happened.

269. MissionCast – A Taste of India – Missouri UMC, Columbia

Members of Missouri United Methodist Church, in Columbia, Missouri were recently treated to “A Taste of India.” The evening was a benefit to raise support for the Ludhiana Medical College and Hospital in India. The evening included an Indian dinner cooked by members of the Missouri United Methodist Church Ludhiana Task Force. Girls from Rock Bridge High School performed Indian dances and two short three minute videos about the ministry in India were shown. The event raised $3094 to provide scholarships for students and to provide health care to those who could not otherwise afford it.

Our thanks to UMTV – United Methodist Communications for the use of this video. April is Native American Awareness Month. However it may be celebrated any Sunday by receiving the annual Native American Awareness Offering, one of the special offerings of the United Methodist Church. Fifty percent of the offering is used nationally and fifty percent of the offering is used with in the conference.

To celebrate earth day 2012, your MissionCast crew took a tour of the solar home of Mitch Ross & Cheryl Marcum, located near Stockton Lake. Mitch and Cheryl are members of the Stockton United Methodist Church.

When they designed and built their solar home five years ago their goal was to reduce electricity and greenhouse gas emissions. Their average monthly electricity bill for their 3718 square foot electric home, for the past five years, has been $63. This includes a $20 per month service charge, all of their lights and appliances, heat for their home and their guinea house, power for their water pump and electric cart, and day use of two home offices.

“On the fourth Saturday of every month the people of Montgomery City are treated to a Community Outreach Fellowship Meal prepared by members of First United Methodist-Presbyterian Church. The meal is served family style and is all cooked either at church or in the homes of church members. The number of their diners has risen to where they serve between 80 and 90 people. To make sure there is enough food but not too much they confirm reservations by phone. For this MissionCast we asked Floy Oliver, Co-coordinator of the fellowship meal to tell us about it.

“Seeds of Change in Arkansas & Appalachia” which will include sheep as will as gardening projects will be the in-country Heifer International project for the 2012 Festival of Sharing. The international project, “Pigs for Hope and Health in Haiti” will feature, pigs for families in Haiti. Carol Oliver, our Heifer International staff person at the Office of Creative Ministries, tells about these two exciting projects in this MissionCast. The 2012 Festival of Sharing will be held at the Missouri State Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 20th. LaFayette Park United Methodist Church is growing because it is involved in making a difference in the surrounding community. Church member, Frank Domke, after attending a class on the outward focused church felt challenged to do something. He started Bridge Bread. As Frank tells it in this MissionCast, Bridge Bread isn’t about making bread but instead about providing jobs and valuable skills to guests at the Bridge. The Bridge is a ministry with downtown St. Louis’ sojourners (homeless), housed in Centenary United Methodist Church. The Bridge feeds hundreds of sojourners each week and helps them with common needs. One of those needs is employment and that is where Bridge Bread comes in.

Casey Andrews, a member of the Cassville United Methodist Church, serves as one of the Missouri Conference Ludhiana Mission Ambassadors. She traveled with four other mission ambassadors to Ludhiana and is available to speak or preach in churches. Casey has served churches where she preached every Sunday as a student at the Northwest Missouri State University, in Maryville. Currently she is the high school speech and theatre teacher in Cassville. At Annual Conference she shared the Ludhiana story, just before the offering, during the ordination service.
