Joplin

Tim and Ellie Brubaker have been living in their RV in Joplin for two months.  They drove to Joplin from their home in Harbor Springs, Michigan to help us coordinate Volunteers in Mission teams serving in Joplin.  Volunteering as they have been doing is nothing new for them.  They served several times in Louisiana after Katrina as well as in Greensburg, Kansas after their tornado.  They have also served in Florida.  What a blessing they have been to our Missouri Conference disaster response ministry in Joplin.  We wanted you to be able to meet them so your MissionCast crew arranged for a visit with them in their home on wheels.
If you would like to bring your RV to Joplin and serve in this manner please contact Jeff Baker at the Office of Creative Ministries.  Phone:  573-474-7155.  Email:  baker@umocm.com
If your congregation has a mission story that you can share in a 1 min to 2 1/2 minute video please send it to us.  If you have questions contact Max Marble at marble@umocm.com or 573-474-7155

The news about the flooding in Northwest Missouri has fallen silent.  Interstate 29 was closed June 15th and is not expected to reopen for another 6 to 12 months.  Businesses dependent on the interstate traffic are suffering.  Some have closed.  Jobs have been lost.  The water has receded some but homes are expected to stay flooded for a long time yet.  Persons who were evacuated and have now returned to their homes are having terrible problems with mold.  The NW Missouri flood story needs to be told.  This MissionCast gives us a start.

Joplin looks much different today than it did a month ago.  In a record amount of time, most of the debris that was about all you could see has been hauled away.  Without branches upon which to grow new leaves, they are growing out of the  tree trunks.  With the job of rebuilding homes still some distance around the corner our volunteer in mission teams are breaking up concrete foundations and carrying the concrete to the curb.  Occasionally a sub floor has to be removed before the concrete can be busted up.  That is what we found the United Methodist Men from New McKendree, in Jackson doing Thursday afternoon.

Their “Hope Epidemic” t-shirts read “The Church Has Left the Building.”  More than 1000 persons turned out for a free breakfast at First United Methodist Church in Sikeston.  After breakfast they spread out through their community to spread the hope and love of Christ.  In addition to doing a lot of flood related work, volunteers did such services as cleaning a burned out lot, sprucing up vacant lots, hanging teacher appreciation banners and praying at schools, handing out quarters and helping with laundry at local Laundromats, cleaning a historic cemetery, talking and playing games with nursing home residents, remodeling rooms at the shelter for abused women, and more.  A group of children sang at each nursing home in town, with many of the residents singing along and doing the hand motions with children.  Teams delivered cookie trays to public officials such as emergency medical technicians, the department of public safety, the Nations Guardsmen who were in town doing flood work.  People were even fed, cared for and even received hair and beauty appointments in the church.

The day truly helped change people’s ideas about church….from something that happens in that building across town to “the church was everywhere we looked.”  People in the community experienced the hope and love of Christ spread throughout their community.
