337. Best of MissionCast – Furnishing Hope – The Word at Shaw United Methodist Church

Haiti

The Best of MissionCast: “They have never been treated with such dignity…” Keith Scarborough, pastor of The Word at Shaw United Methodist Church, in St. Louis, was speaking to us about the homeless women who come to his church looking for furniture with which to furnish their apartments. The women receive more than furniture….they receive hope. Thus this new ministry, coordinate by Joleen Mayfield, at the Word at Shaw is called “Furnishing Hope.” It is a partnership ministry with the Shalom House and Green Trails UMC along with some help from other area churches. The ministry is for women who have completed the course at Shalom House and are ready to graduate to an apartment of their own. Picking out furnishing at The Word at Shaw is like going to Dillard’s or Ikea.

The United Methodist Church of Green Trails was chosen to receive the 2011 Shalom House Community Impact Award in recognition of their partnership, investment, and hands-on service that positively impacts the lives of Shalom House residents and graduates.

The United Methodist Church of Green Trails chose Shalom House as the focus of its local missions.  Individuals within the congregation have been regularly involved in service at Shalom House in projects such as supporting residents with computer-based needs like resume building and job searching and preparing meals and a menu for food in the Emergency Shelter Program. Under the leadership of Pastor Nate Berneking, the United Methodist Church of Green Trails has helped provide a much-needed new roof and soon-to-be-installed enhanced security system to the “home” of our residents.  Girded in passion for the mission of Shalom House, The United Methodist Church of Green Trails has convened a covenantal partnership of 5 other area churches to improve Shalom House’s infrastructure in ways that will eliminate frequent needs from the agency and create better repeatable systems to support Shalom House women.

If your congregation has a mission story that you can share in a 1 min to 2 1/2 minute video please send it to us.  If you have questions contact Max Marble at marble@umocm.com or 573-474-7155

The initial celebration was held at Kingdom House where clients and community kids received sneakers, backpacks and school supplies to get the ready to return to school. There was a carnival atmosphere. Members of Living Word United Methodist Church did the set up and members from Manchester United Methodist, dressed in the blue t-shirts did the distribution. All of the churches collected items that were distributed.

223. MissionCast – Kingdom House – Leading Congregations into Service

MissionCast:  Kingdom House – Serving Church & Community

Jeff and Jamie

Kingdom House, a mission of the United Methodist Church, has taken seriously the Missouri Conference statement of purpose which is to “lead congregations to lead people to actively follow Jesus Christ.”  They have added a new position to their staff:  Coordinator of Volunteer Mission and Service Learning.  Meet Kenneth Pruitt, who serves in this position, in this MissionCast.

Kingdom House is a Family Support Program serving low-income clients living in the City of St. Louis primarily in zip codes 63104 and 63118.  Services include: brief counseling, case management, trips to the food pantry and thrift store, referrals to other services we do not provide, participation in our Annual Neighborhood Christmas Shop, and the United Way’s “100 Neediest Cases” Program.  Family Support Services helps clients achieve a better life and break the cycle of poverty by helping them identify their resources, needs, and problems.  They locate the barriers to getting needs fulfilled and problems overcome.  They encourage them to find solutions and then take action on those solutions.
