337. Best of MissionCast – Furnishing Hope – The Word at Shaw United Methodist Church

Haiti

The Best of MissionCast: “They have never been treated with such dignity…” Keith Scarborough, pastor of The Word at Shaw United Methodist Church, in St. Louis, was speaking to us about the homeless women who come to his church looking for furniture with which to furnish their apartments. The women receive more than furniture….they receive hope. Thus this new ministry, coordinate by Joleen Mayfield, at the Word at Shaw is called “Furnishing Hope.” It is a partnership ministry with the Shalom House and Green Trails UMC along with some help from other area churches. The ministry is for women who have completed the course at Shalom House and are ready to graduate to an apartment of their own. Picking out furnishing at The Word at Shaw is like going to Dillard’s or Ikea.

306. MissionCast – Winter Shelter – Wilkes Blvd. UMC

Haiti

Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist Church in Columbia opened its doors to host the homeless during the entire frigid month of January. The congregation has also opened its doors to the homeless by providing space for Columbia’s Loaves and Fishes homeless feeding ministry. Both of these ministries have wide support from Columbia churches which provide funds and volunteers, but the Wilkes Blvd. congregation has recently reached out to the people living in their immediate community by providing space for these and other community outreach ministries. Your MissionCast crew enjoyed worshiping with the congregation and interviewing pastor Meg Hegemann in order to bring you this mission story.
