109. April Is Pass On The Gift Month – Heifer International

woman and goat

Now in its 65th year, Heifer International has used livestock and training to help millions of families lift themselves out of poverty and then watched them Pass On the Gift of their new skills and offspring of their animals to other needy families, transforming entire communities.

This April, Heifer is inviting everyone, churches, schools and individuals to take part in a truly global event honoring those millions of examples of success.

During the month of April, over 200 Pass On the Gift ceremonies will be celebrated in towns and villages around the world – from Nepal to Uganda to Poland to Ecuador.  Heifer families will pass on dairy cows, dairy goats, alpacas, and water buffalo as well as worms, trees and bees and other animals to help new families start on the road to self-reliance.

So we invite you to join in the celebration by hosting an educational and fund raising event at your church or in your home or at a nearby coffee shop with neighbors, family and friends.  Heifer has provided lots of resources to make it easy!  A booklet filled with ideas also contains a CD with multiple clips that tell the story about Heifer’s work.  All resources are free.  Heifer’s website at www.heifer.org   is another rich source of material with games, free downloads and even an option for posting your event on a map.

So please join us in this celebration by passing on your gifts and sharing with others.  With your contributions, Heifer will be able to provide hope and a new way of life to the millions of families who still struggle on a daily basis.  Please join us in this effort to expand the network of hope, dignity and self-reliance around the world.

95. Bringing Self-Reliance to Women in Nepal

(MissionCasts are indexed by topic.  Click here to view the entire MissionCast library)

NepalWe think of Heifer International as an organization which seeks to alleviate hunger and poverty.  It is indeed such an organization, however, it is much more.  There is the old proverb:  “Give a person a fish and feed him/her for a day; but give them a fishing pole and teach them how to fish and feed them for life.”  Heifer International seeks to alleviate hunger and poverty in such a way that is gives people dignity, builds self-esteem and makes them self-reliant. It does this through teaching a community of people 12 cornerstones for developing self-reliance.  It then gives impoverished families animals to raise as a source of income and food but it does this also through the community organization which is now guided by the 12 cornerstones.  The community takes ownership of the program and makes the decisions about who receives the animals.  All of this is done in such a way that it builds self-reliance for the individual families and also for the community.  To learn more about Heifer International’s approach and how you can help call the Office of Creative Ministries and speak to Carol Oliver, who serves as Heifer’s representative in Missouri. 66. Heifer International – Nepal

BasantiWhat most people know about Heifer International is that it is an organization that gives animals to impoverished families to provide a source of extra income. Many people also know that through a program called “the passing on of the gift” each improvised family that receives animals pass on the first off springs of their animals to other impoverished familes. It is a gift that keeps on giving. What this Heifer International video illustrates is that Heifer International does a whole lot more. Everywhere they work they provide education with the goal of making families and communities self-reliant. Basanti in this video is given the education she needs to care of the medical needs of the animals in her community. The service that she performs gives her the confidence she needs to set her horizon on becoming a veterinarian doctor.
