395. MissionCast – One Great Hour of Sharing

HaitiThe Missouri Conference has received from the United Methodist Committee on Relief or UMCOR many millions of dollars in the past 20 years to bring relief to survivors of floods, tornados, fires and ice storms. It is interesting to note that UMCOR the world-wide disaster response agency of our church receives no operating funds through apportionments. UMCOR is able to provide hope and relief to millions solely because of the generous donations given through special appeals and the One Great Hour of Sharing.

372. MissionCast – Hope Swings (Palmyra UMC & Mt. Olivet UMC)

HaitiThe Palmyra and Mt. Olivet United Methodist Churches recently built swing sets for families with children in Washington, Illinois. Last November a devastating tornado ripped through the town. While houses were rebuilt rapidly play equipment for children were not. So three churches in Illinois started the “Hope Swings” project with the goal of building 100 swing sets in 42 days. This MissionCast tells about Missouri’s participation in “Hope Swings.”

Athletes

From the Best of MissionCast: You may have missed a chance of a lifetime if you were not there at Sunrise United Methodist Church. Indeed there were people standing, sitting and lying down in line as early as 5am for the church doors to open at 10am. About 30 athletes from the metropolitan area drove to Sunrise United Methodist Church to give autographs in exchange for donations for our United Methodist Disaster Response ministry in Joplin and all across Missouri. The main organizer of the event was associate pastor, Troy Merseal.

Admission was $20 for adults and $10 for youth and children. For the admission fee you could get over 25 autographs of area athletes. There was an extra ten dollar charge for certain celebrity autographs like those of the Cardinal’s Matt Holiday, Adam Wainwright and Skip Shumaker. At one point the autographs for these athletes went up to $50 a piece. People brought in pictures, baseball cards, helmets, bats, gloves, shirts, mascots and even little models of the players themselves. Rev Jim Blue estimated that 90% of those making donations for disaster response were people from the community who were not attending Sunrise United Methodist Church. Or might we hopefully say not attending as yet.

316. The Building Destroyed, But Not the Church

Haiti

The St. James United Methodist Church building was completely destroyed in the tornado that hit Joplin two years ago. After meeting in several different places since the tornado they are now back worshiping on their property. Rev. Thomas Freeman, quite rightly said, “we lost the building but not the church”. The Church is back and in a new church building that is as up-to-date as they get. Rev. Freeman gave us a tour for this MissionCast and what we saw was very impressive and inspiring.

305. MissionCast – Missouri United Methodists Help Sandy Survivors

Haiti

Soon after Hurricane Sandy trounced the East Coast, Kevin Fisher, Jim Gleason and Jack Davidson from Liberty United Methodist Church and Joe Bartelsmeyer from Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church headed to Middletown, New Jersey. They took along one of the Office of Creative Ministries skid loaders. They worked on several homes but spent three days helping Ruth. She was happy to speak to Jim’s camera/phone. And MissionCast is happy to bring you her story.
