“God’s Renewed Creation: Call to Hope and Action.”
–United Methodist Council of Bishops

To celebrate earth day 2012, your MissionCast crew took a tour of the solar home of Mitch Ross & Cheryl Marcum, located near Stockton Lake. Mitch and Cheryl are members of the Stockton United Methodist Church.

When they designed and built their solar home five years ago their goal was to reduce electricity and greenhouse gas emissions. Their average monthly electricity bill for their 3718 square foot electric home, for the past five years, has been $63. This includes a $20 per month service charge, all of their lights and appliances, heat for their home and their guinea house, power for their water pump and electric cart, and day use of two home offices.

To view the whole solar home tour which is 23 minutes long go to http://momissioncast.com/videos/ep267_23min_solar_home_tour_med.wmv

To take the tour at a higher resolution go to http://momissioncast.com/videos/ep267_23min_solar_home_tour_higher.wmv

In their document, God’s Renewed Creation: Call to Hope and Action, the United Methodist bishops have said, “We cannot help the world until we change our way of being in it,” As we celebrate earth day 2012, let us all consider ways we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save this beautiful earth for our grand kids and their kids. Boy

This video used by permission from UMTV-United Methodist Communications, is about Creation Care.  In particular it is about planting trees.  Riverside United Methodist Church, in Riverside, Illinois, scheduled a tree planting day during which the congregation planted 1,000 trees in their community.  It was a way of beautifying their community as well as caring for creation.  The Missouri Conference Office of Creative Ministries will again sponsor a Creation Care Day that will take place on Saturday, March 20.  Place this day on your calendar and explore ways that your congregation can care for creation.

135. MissionCast – Christ Community UMC Community Garden and Food Pantry

For MissionCast, click the picture or one of the links below to view or download the video.

Christ Community

Christ Community United Methodist Church, in the heart of St. Louis, is reaching out to their community by providing garden plots for individuals to grow food for themselves and by providing food through their emergency food pantry.  They also use their community garden for growing food for distribution through their food pantry.  A growing number of churches in the Missouri Conference are turning to this kind of green outreach ministry using portions of their church lawn to feed people rather than simply growing grass.  If your congregation is doing this we would like to hear about it.  Let us know by adding a comment at the bottom of this MissionCast page.

You can read about the Christ Community United Methodist Church garden ministry in the August 7, 2009 issue of the Review, which is the Missouri Conference Newspaper.   You can go to the electronic edition of the Review by clicking the link below.

119. A Doctor for the Earth – Creation Care

Creation Care

Dr. Matthew Sleeth was one of the persons our Missouri Conference Creation Care Committee wanted to speak at the recent 2009 Creation Care Conference.  That did not turn out to be possible so we are happy to bring to you this week Dr. Sleeth via this UMTV video.
Dr. Sleeth, a former emergency room doctor, traded in his practice of saving lives in the hospital to saving the planet earth.  His book, Save the Planet is a deeply personal book with far-reaching ramifications for Christians and all those who take their devotion to God seriously.

We are thankful to UMTV, United Methodist Communications, for the use of this view.  If you are interested in more information about Creation Care in the Missouri Conference contact the Office of Creative Ministries at 573-474-7155 or marble@umocm.com and go to the Office of Creative Ministries website at http://www.umocm.com
