Room at the Inn

First United Methodist Church of Webster Groves offers hospitality to homeless women and children by transforming their fellowship hall into a “room at the inn.”  They do this in connection with a number of other area churches.  The ministry involves about 25 volunteers each time they open up their shelter.  In this MissionCast their Room at the Inn coordinator, Joan Bell, shares what all is involved for a congregation  to be involved in the ministry and what the ministry means to their congregation.

Mozambique

Called the Wizard of Oz for this amazing plays as short-stop for the St. Louis Cardinals, baseball’s Hall of Fame legend, Ozzie Smith went to bat for The Bridge.  Ozzie opened his downtown St. Louis restaurant to raise funds for Centenary United Methodist Church’s ministry with the homeless called the Bridge.

The Bridge provides a short-stop for food, community and support services to hundreds of St. Louis’s homeless every week.  Ozzie was baseball’s short-stop king so it was wonderful for him to lend his support to this ministry.

At the Bridge, they understand that being without a home of one’s own doesn’t mean that you no longer share the basic needs and desires of everyday life.  It just means that it’s harder to meet those needs. The Bridge is open 60 hours each week to provide meals and services that will help to ease the burdens of downtown St. Louis’ sojourners–and to provide the “step up” that will help them get started on their journey home.

You can go to bat for The Bridge as well.  To donate or more information go to http://centenarystl.org

Mozambique

St. John’s United Methodist Church, in Kansas City, Missouri decided to share their capital campaign with their partner church in Mozambique.  They have been surprised by how far the 5% of their capital campaign has been able to go in Mozambique.  First they helped their partner congregation build a permanent home for their parsonage family, next their funds built a dormitory and dining area for a woman’s shelter and eventually will help build a permanent chapel for their partner church.  Pastor, Kyle Hern and Lay Leader, Julie Salmon share the joy and excitement that this sharing of capital resources has brought to their Kansas City Church.
