160. Taking Easter to the City – the Gathering UMC

EasterThe Gathering United Methodist Church took their Easter worship service to the St. Louis city streets.  The Gathering is just three years old and yet drew in a congregation of around a thousand for Easter.  On other Sundays you can find the Gathering worshiping in their sanctuary which was built long ago.  When the church closed because of to few members the Gathering started a totally new congregation devoted to offering compelling worship to new generations of people living in the city.

MissionCast was on hand Easter morning and brings you this overview of the service and what the Gathering United Methodist Church is all about.  MissionCasts are usually 2 to 3 minutes long.  This week’s MissionCast is almost 4 minutes but worth the extra minute.

157. MissionCast – Prison Pen Pals – Turney UMC

prisonWhile attending Annual Conference last year, Betty Woodring from Turney United Methodist Church, was inspired by things Rev. Harold Johnson said about prison ministry.  She went right home and engaged her friends at church in a prison pen pal ministry.  The ministry has grown as she has also invited former teaching associates, family members and others to correspond with prisoners.  MissionCast had the joy of interviewing Betty at her Turney United Methodist Church.  In this MissionCast she shares how this ministry got started and what it has meant personally to her and her friends.  In addition to simply writing letters she sends her church bullitens, Sunday School lessons, items of interest from the newspaper, greeting cards and more.  Her pen pal’s cellmate sometime ago asked Betty if she could find a pen pal for him.  And others have asked Betty for pen pals as well.  Betty’s sharing of her faith in this way led to her pen pal and his cell mate being baptized just before Christmas.  This is a wonderful story.

We always hold MissionCasts to less than three minutes.  However we have included the full ten minute interview because it includes information that is good for others wishing to become prison pen pals and inviting church members to join in as well.

If you would like to learn even more about this ministry you may call the Office of Creative Ministries (573-474-7155) for contact information for Betty Woodring or Rev. Harold Johnson.  You may also email Max Marble, at the Office of Creative Ministries, at marble@umocm.com

156. MissionCast – Christ in the Debris – Kevin Fisher – Liberty UMC

ChristKevin Fisher from Liberty United Methodist Church is one of our conference’s very committed and active responders when disasters strike.  He has helped build a very effective disaster response team at Liberty United Methodist Church.  The Liberty team has taken a FEMA trailer and converted it to a fully equipped kitchen from which to serve food after a disaster.  Governor Nixon even invite Kevin to be an honored guest during his 2010 State of the State Address.  What we didn’t know about Kevin until recently is that he can do wonders with wood.  Liberty United Methodist Church just dedicated a wood mosaic head of Christ that Kevin hand carved.  Kevin calls it “Christ in the Debris.”  All of the wood was debris from disasters before Kevin worked his magic.  Kevin says that while working in the field after a disaster they are constantly meeting Christ among the disaster survivors.

MissionCast interview Kevin Fisher at Liberty United Methodism Church and brings you his story.  Click here for information about what disasters the various kinds of wood were taken from.
If you would like to become active in disaster response or if you would like to train a team from your church to do this you may contact Jeff Baker at the Office of Creative Ministries.  Phone:  573-474-7155  Email: baker@umocm.com

155. MissionCast – Missouri Health Kits for Haiti – Packed at Fairview UMC

health kitsOver 15,000 health kits for Haiti were contributed by congregations from across the state.  The Office of Creative Ministries organized about a dozen drop-off sites around the church.  All of the kits were processed and boxed into shipping boxes for delivery to Haiti at Fairview United Methodist Church in Columbia.  The kits were then delivered to Little Rock, Arkansas and are now on their way to Haiti to be distributed to earthquake survivors.

We are thankful to Rev. Nick Campbell for taping and producing this MissionCast.
