142. MissionCast – Rebuilding New Orleans – Outward Focused Hope UMC

New OrleansMissionCast caught up with Rev. John Payne, and members of Hope United Methodist Church in New Orleans.  Hope UMC in Lone Jack, Missouri is an outward focused congregation that reaches out in mission in many ways.  On this particular ocasion they were down in New Orleans putting the finishing touches on Debra Simmon’s home.  It has been 4 long years since Debra was in her home and she was so very appreciative to Hope for giving her hope.

Tasha Stephens, their team leader, wants us to know that there still is a lot of work to be done in New Orleans.  If your congregation would like information about reaching out like this contact Audrey Phelps at the Office of Creative Ministries.  (phelps@umocm.com or 573-474-7155)

For MissionCast, click the picture or one of the links below to view or download the video.

Russia

Audrey Phelps, Volunteers in Mission Coordinator, at the Office of Creative Ministries, recently led a volunteers in mission team to Voronezh, Russia.  Voronezh is the site of the only camp for the new and emerging United Methodist Church in Russia.  When the camp was purchased by the church it was in very poor shape.  The Missouri team worked to improves the facilities for use by the church.  There is still a lot of work yet to be done.  If you think your congregation would like to send a team to work on the camp please contact Audrey by calling her at the Office of Creative Ministries (573-474-7155) or emailing her at phelps@umocm.com

We are grateful to Matt Miofsky, pastor of the Gathering UMC, and Mike Wondell, pastor of New Covenant UMC,  who traveled to Voronezh on behalf of the Office of Creative Ministries to scout out the project.  They both are planning to lead VIM teams to Russia next year.  If you would like to join either of their teams please call Audrey as well.

St. Paul UMC

The men of Wesley United Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church, in Jefferson City teamed up to put a new roof on St. Paul United Methodist Church, in nearby New Bloomfield, Missouri.  The two churches took to the New Bloomfield roof after having completed a Habitat for Humanity home in Jefferson City.  The St. Paul United Methodist Church members prepared lunch for the men on each day of this two day project.  Dr. Arnold Park, pastor, and members of the congregation were very appreciative of this neighborly volunteers in mission outreach.

115. Volunteers in Mission – Guatemala – Morning Star UMC

Emilee

Volunteers in Mission is a grass roots mission movement where churches send volunteers to the mission field for a week or two of service.  Morning Star United Methodist Church in O’Fallon, Missouri has been sending volunteers in mission teams to Guatemala.  MissionCast was at Morning Star and interviewed a few of their recent volunteers during the break between their two worship services on Sunday morning.

For information about how to get a Volunteers in Mission program going in your church contact Audrey Phelps, at the Office of Creative Ministries.  (phelps@umocm.com or 573-474-7155)

Here is a letter that Emilee (pictured) wrote to her teacher upon return from the mission trip that she talks about in the MissionCast.

Dear Mr. Bearden,
The two best things I did over spring break was realizing how much God can do through one person, because when I was in Guatemala at the feeding center the founder of the feeding center (Sarita) had pretty much changed all the kids there. When the center started none of the kids would even make eye-contact with you, much less play with you. The other way I realized how much God can do was that God is helping Sarita keep all of the kids at the school and center alive through Sarita, the teachers, and the cooks. My other favorite part of spring break was getting to do Vacation Bible School at all of the feeding centers and that was one of the best parts of spring break because I love to see kids have fun. We did a Bible point and when someone said the point all of the kids had to yell “VIVA!” It was just really cool to see them smiling and having fun learning about God and Jesus! I hope you had a great spring break!
Sincerely,
Emilee Long

113. Spring Break Louisiana – Community UMC, Columbia

Spring Break

University of Missouri students from Community United Methodist Church, in Columbia, Missouri, served in New Orleans over spring break.  They worked on homes that were destroyed years ago by hurricane Katrina.  MissionCast caught up with three of the students at Community to listen to their experience.  Thank you to Liz Hinz, Sami Owen and Ben Rackets for sharing with us.  Tammy Shelton from Community also served on the team as one of the team leaders.  They report that it is estimated that mission teams will be needed for the next 18 years to complete the cases that are still open and are needing attention.
If you are interested in serving in this way contact Audrey Phelps, at the Office of Creative Ministries.  (phelps@umocm.com / 573-474-7155)
Thanks to the many Missouri college students that we learned about on facebook, and from whom we requested permission to use their pictures, who also spent spring break on this project that was planned by Beverly Boehmer and the Missouri Collection Connection.
