The Methodists of Missouri have not started a church in the St. Louis inter-loop area for 100 years, though many have been closed. After one of the churches closed due to a lack of young families, Rev. Matt Miofsky asked to start a new congregation targeting young adults and families. The previous congregation that closed had a good life and peaked with an average attendance of 300 and then dwindled to nothing. Now three years after the opening of the new church, The Gathering UMC, the congregation is averaging over 500 on Sunday. One of the reasons for success has been converting an old traditional church building into a kid friendly space. In this MissionCast Kyle Kranes, Director of Family Ministries at The Gathering UMC, gives us a tour.

Born Again Mission Store – Bell City United Methodist Church
From the Bell City UMC website: The name of the store reflects both who we are and what we do. The mission store was “born†through Bible studies and Visioning Team meetings at Bell City United Methodist Church. The Church wants to continue to grow in local mission work and give back to the community, thus Born Again was created. The store accepts donated items. Some of the items are new, some have been lovingly used, but as they find a new home, they are truly Born Again, just as we in our walk with God, are Born Again. The items in the store are sold at garage sale type prices and anyone can shop at Born Again. All the proceeds from the sale of items in the store are put back into the United Methodist Women’s Mission Fund and those dollars are used locally to assist with utilities, groceries, medicine, and other needs we are made aware of. Assistance is not based upon church membership at Bell City UMC or any other church, but upon the need of others for a helping hand during tough times.
The store is open every Monday and Thursday from 9am to 4pm and also on the first Saturday of every month with baked goods available on the Saturdays. For information about how they started this ministry and for other questions about what they do email bcumc@cablerocket.com.

The Ozark United Methodist Church is sending a Volunteers in Mission team to Mozambique to build a church. They are raising money for the building materials in a variety of ways. This MissionCast tells about the Block Party they held to raise some of the money. It is not the kind of block party that comes to mind when you hear the term. Actually the church is located on a large expanse of land all by itself rather than in a neighborhood surrounded by blocks of houses.
During their worship service they showed a video telling about their plans to build the church in Mozambique through the efforts of their Volunteers in Mission trip. They did a great job on the video and they have made it available for us to see. To download or view their video click here.
