345. MissionCast – Hallelujah Chorus – Missouri UMC

Haiti

Each year during Advent Missouri United Methodist Church, in Columbia, prepares a worship service full of music to share with the Columbia community and their church members. Traditionally the service ends with the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah. Our MissionCast this week’s shares with you the concluding two minutes of the Hallelujah Chorus. Missouri United Methodist Church received its name from the fact that every congregation in Missouri collected nickels and dimes to build this beautiful church to have a significant presence on the campus of the University of Missouri. The church itself is an expression of mission outreach on the part of every congregation in Missouri.

344. MissionCast – Little Bethlehem – Fairview UMC

Haiti

For Christmas we decided to bring back this gem from the best of MissionCast. Each year the front yard of Fairview United Methodist Church, in Columbia, becomes transformed into the little town of Bethlehem, letting the Columbia community experience the Biblical Christmas story. Lantern in hand, shepherds guide small groups though the streets of Bethlehem ending up in the stable before Mary and Joseph and the Christ child.

If your congregation does something like this let us know so we can put you down for the 2014 Christmas MissionCast. Contact Max Marble at MarbleLCMC@gmail.com

342. MissionCast – Largest Fair Trade Market – Manchester UMC

Haiti

A number of our United Methodist Churches host fair trade markets. Global Market is a year around fair trade market hosted by the Community United Methodist Church, in Columbia. Recently MissionCast had to joy of experiencing the largest free standing fair trade market in the country. It is hosted each year by Manchester United Methodist Church in St. Louis on two weekends in November.
Any church can host a fair trade market. Organizations like Ten Thousand Villages (www.tenthousandvillages.com) and SERVE (www.serrv.org) will pack up a kit of products and send it to your church. If some items don’t sell you can send them back. The fair trade market at Manchester United Methodist Church started out very small with a cart selling fair trade coffee and then grew and grew. Help eliminate poverty by providing growers and artisans with a living wage and fair price for their products.

341. Thanksgiving MissionCast – Apple Butter for Missions – Salem UMC

Haiti

The Salem United Methodist Church has been making apple butter for their United Methodist Women’s bazaar for 40 years. It is a four day process that involves over 80 persons. They have a lot of fun and all of the money goes to mainly local but also statewide and international missions. Since most of the ingredients are donated their apple butter raises around $3,000 for missions. We are thankful to them for sitting down and telling MissionCast about their annual apple butter making event.
