151. Stories From Returning Haiti Volunteers

Giving Online

Volunteers serving in Haiti at the time of the earthquake share their memories in the UMTV (United Methodist Communications) video that we are using with their permission.

There will be a great need for volunteers to help rebuild in Haiti once the initial crisis has settled. At this time, it is not safe or possible for volunteers to go. The country is in crisis with severe lack of fuel, food and water. There are significant transportation and security challenges. The General Board of Global Ministries will be working with the Methodist Church of Haiti and other organizations in providing medical and other services. If you want to volunteer to go to Haiti when the opportunity becomes available, go to www.umocm.com and fill out the survey for volunteers.

If you have specific questions please call or email Audrey Phelps at the Office of Creative Ministries.  Phone 573-474-7155  Email: phelps@umocm.com

150. MissionCast – Haiti Earthquake Appeal

Giving Online

This has been a week of immense tragedy.  The earthquake that toppled buildings in Haiti has taken over a hundred thousand lives.  Hundreds of thousands more have been left homeless.  Sam Dixon, the Director of our United Committee on Relief was one of those who lost his life.  Clint Rabb with whom I traveled on the first Missouri Conference leadership team to Mozambique was rescued but then died in a Florida hospital.  This word came to us after the MissionCast was taped.  Untold thousands are desperately in need of food, water, medical attention, housing and supplies.  We in Missouri are responding with gifts of our financial resources through our UMCOR Advance Special #418325 and through assembling Festival of Sharing Health Kits, Baby Bundles and IMA Medicine Boxes.  Keep scrolling down for the contents of the kits and drop-off points around the state.

149. Alleviating Poverty One Person at a Time – University UMC

Giving Online

University United Methodist Church in St. Louis has started an innovative way to alleviate poverty one person at a time.   Through an organization called Kiva they make micro credit loans to people through out the world to get them started in small business ventures.  The emphasis is on small, widespread participation in grass-roots real-time lending to people with names and faces.

Your MissionCast crew attended a recent meeting of the U-City Micro Credit Loan Club.  Meetings are held at the U-City public library to encourage participation by members of the University City community who are not members of the church.  The coordinators of this new ministry are Tom Mitchell and Rich Wymore, who members of University United Methodist Church.

The club's activities are a designated fund of University City UMC and

can be viewed on the church's webpage www.universityumc.com/ucitymicrocreditclub

If you or a group from your church or community would like to get in

147. MissionCast – Giving Online Is Quick And Easy

Giving Online MissionCast #147 is a special Christmas MissionCast that shows step by step just how easy it is to give online to a United Methodist General Advance Mission Project.  Your local church, district and conference will receive credit for your gift.  And you can even make your donation as an alternative Christmas gift.  Or you can give your gift in honor or in memory  of someone you love and respect.  Pick from a variety of gift cards and messages and before you have time to print one out you will receive a donation receipt for tax purposes from the General Board of Global Ministries.

Donations can be made to all kinds of projects and organizations in Missouri, across the nation and around the world through the Advance.  Donations can also be made for the support of any of our United Methodist Missionaries through this channel of giving.  A few examples of ministries that can be supported through the Advance that we are familiar with in Missouri are PET, Kingdom House, Spofford Home, Heifer International, Habitat for Humanity, Bread For the World, UMCOR and many many more.
If you would like to make a donation to the Ludhiana Medical College and Hospital click here for a link that will take you directly to the project on the General Board of Global Ministries website.  To see a MissionCast about the Ludhiana Medical College and Hospital click here.
