141. MissionCast – Backpack Snacks – Grace UMC, Sullivan, Missouri

Filling Backpack SnackSecond grade teacher, Michelle Rhoads,  is interviewed in this MissionCast video as she tells about the importance of the backpack snacks outreach program of the Grace United Methodist Church.

Many school-aged children get breakfast and lunch at school during the school year.  About half of Sullivan, Missouri’s school children qualify for free or reduced lunches. Over the weekends, however, many children do not have access to food.  The Grace United Methodist Congregation is filling this gap by providing “backpack snacks.”  The backpacks contain healthy, nutritious snacks for these children to take home each weekend. Items in the backpacks include things like shelf-stable milk, pasta bowls, fruit juice, applesauce, peanut butter, mac and cheese, and granola bars.

We are so very appreciative of the Grace media team and their pastor Steve Williams for making this video and giving us permission to use it for a MissionCast.

Ludhiana, India

As United Methodists we have a long historic relationship with the Ludhiana Christian Medical College and Hospital.  In the past we have sent missionary doctors and staff to Ludhiana to serve.  It was good visiting Ludhiana and getting a first had look as this incredible ministry of teaching and healing that is still a part of our United Methodist outreach.

I hope you will consider supporting the incredible ministry of healing.  Ask your church treasurer to send your gift to the Missouri Conference Office as a General Advance Special  #12429B (Ludhiana Christian Medical College & Hospital, India)

138. MissionCast – Festival of Sharing

For MissionCast, click the picture or one of the links below to view or download the video.

Festival of Sharing

The Festival of Sharing is all about people like Beatrice pictured to the right.  You could have heard a pin drop from where I was taping while Beatrice, now grown, told the 400 youth present at the Festival of Sharing Youthfest, about her life.  Twenty minutes of thoughful questions followed.  Beatrice lives in Uganda, Africa.  Her family could not afford to send the children to school.  It all changed when the family received the gift of a Heifer International goat.  With the income from that one goat Beatrice and her brothers and sisters were able to attend school.  She is not doing graduate studies in the United States.
The Festival of Sharing is all about making a difference in the lives of people in need here in Missouri, across our country and around the world.  It is an amazing spirit filled event which involves thousands of people making gifts for the poor through the year and bringing them to the Sedalia or one of the many Festival of Sharing sites around the state.  And it involves hundreds of volunteers on the actual days when each event is held.  This MissionCast shows a little of what happened in Sedalia.  Mark Saturday, October 16, 2010, on your calandar to attend again next year.

DVDs of Beatrice’s full presentation to the youth and the thoughtful questions they asked will be available from the Office of Creative Ministries.  Just email Dora at thackery@umocm.com

137. MissionCast – Festival of Sharing Quilt Shows & Auction

For MissionCast, click the picture or one of the links below to view or download the video.

Quilts

The Quilt Auction is one of the events that draws people to the Festival of Sharing, held each year, at the Missouri State Fairgrounds, in Sedalia.  Prior to the Festival of Sharing quilt preview shows are held around the state.  Terri William, the Festival of Sharing Coordinator, at the Office of Creative Ministries took the quilt show on the road and captured some video for us to see.  One hundred percent of the money raised during the Festival of Sharing quilt auction is used to purchase Church World Service blankets and tools of hope.
