Wardrobe

The Wardrobe is located in Hayti, Missouri, and serves the surrounding communities with inexpensive clothing and when possible and for people who need it free food boxes.  It is a ministry of the Office of Creative Ministries and the Hayti United Methodist Church, with support from area United Methodist Churches.  Currently Stephen and Faye Rhodes, members of the Hayti United Methodist Church, coordinate the ministry and give voluntarily of their time and energy to keep the important ministry well oiled.  Churches, families and individuals wishing to help make a Christian difference in the area may send contributions through the Office of Creative Ministries, 3009 David Drive, Columbia, MO  65202 / 573-474-7155.  It takes about $1,000 a month to purchase extra items for the food boxes.  We invite you to pray about supporting this food ministry for a month by sending $1,000 or by sending $30 for a food box.  In addition to financial resources the ministry needs two or three volunteers in mission teams to complete work on a brand new building that will help expand the ministry.  For more information about this project you may contact Jeff Baker, at the Office of Creative Ministries.  (baker@umocm.com)

The Calhoun United Methodist Church is located in Calhoun, Missouri, north of Clinton, with a population of 491. Drake’s Chapel United Methodist Church is an open country church just south of Calhoun.  What they have in common is that they are both small churches and are both growing rapidly.Another thing they have in common is that they are outward focused.  Both congregations have found ways to reach out beyond their walls and it has meant that more and more people are joining them.Besides giving through the Festival of Sharing in big ways, they support a seminary student in Mozambique, participate in Angel Food ministry, distribute food through the Samaritan Center, offer their facilities when the community needs them, they cleaned up an over gown dreary community cemetery and much more.  Calhoun sends out cards to all members of their community upon special occasions.Another thing they have in common is great leadership in the form of their certified lay pastor, Margie Briggs.

Mary Z Longstreth

Mary Z. Longstreth is a Deaconess and United Methodist missionary serving as the Director of Faith in Community Ministries, in Indianapolis, Indiana.  However, Missouri is her home state.  We caught up with Mary Z at Wilkes Blvd. United Methodist Church, in Columbia, where her father served as pastor when she was growing up.  She was invited to Wilkes to share her story while itinerating in Missouri.
Her ministry involves the formation for Faith Care Teams.  Faith communities identify 6-8 individuals committed to developing a supportive, caring relationship with an incarcerated person who will be returning to their community as their neighbor.  Trained care team members regularly visit and correspond with the incarcerated neighbor and help him/her prepare for release.  Prior to release, the care team and neighbor develop a covenant agreement of expectations and commitment to activities necessary for successful re-entry, reintegration and restorative relationships.  The care team provides practical, emotional and spiritual support throughout the transition to community life.In this MissionCast Mary Z tells about Buddy and the congregation that prepared for “someone out there” who became a part of their church family.More information may be found on the Faith in Community website at http://www.choicesteam.org/fcm.htmlFor information about providing support for Mary Z as one of our Missouri missionaries contact Alan Pruitt, who serves as the Missouri Conference Secretary for Global Ministries at pruitta1@yahoo.com  Her missionary support advance special number is #982982.

127. Health Care

Health care

First United Methodist Church, near Los Angeles, opperates a free clinic as a part of their ministry.  When I saw this UMTV video I thought of First United Methodist Church in West Plains, Missouri.  They have a task force working on doing something like this as a part of their ministry in the West Plains area.  The Free Health Clinic shown in this MissionCast uses volunteer doctors, nurses and college students to serve their community in a wonderful way.
If your congregation is involved in this kind of ministry we would like to hear about it.  Please let us know by adding a comment on this MissionCast or by emailing Max Marble at marble@umocm.com
