116. Kid’s Place – University United Methodist Church

child

MissionCast #116 is about Kid’s Place, a remarkable community outreach ministry developed by Brenda Stobbe, Program Director at University United Methodist Church, in St. Louis.  The program now in its 10th year has grown and matured into the kind of program that is making a real difference in the community that surrounds the church.  Kid’s Place Coordinator, Terry Chi, says that the two main focuses of the ministry are teaching literacy and civic and social responsibility.  Four days a week volunteers and staff meeting the kids at the nearby grade school, supervise some play time at the school and then walk them to the church for refreshments, a science project, a hearty meal and then an hour for homework and tutoring.  To learn more about the program you may calll University United Methodist Church and speak to Brenda Stobbe at (314) 863-8055.

115. Volunteers in Mission – Guatemala – Morning Star UMC

Emilee

Volunteers in Mission is a grass roots mission movement where churches send volunteers to the mission field for a week or two of service.  Morning Star United Methodist Church in O’Fallon, Missouri has been sending volunteers in mission teams to Guatemala.  MissionCast was at Morning Star and interviewed a few of their recent volunteers during the break between their two worship services on Sunday morning.

For information about how to get a Volunteers in Mission program going in your church contact Audrey Phelps, at the Office of Creative Ministries.  (phelps@umocm.com or 573-474-7155)

Here is a letter that Emilee (pictured) wrote to her teacher upon return from the mission trip that she talks about in the MissionCast.

Dear Mr. Bearden,
The two best things I did over spring break was realizing how much God can do through one person, because when I was in Guatemala at the feeding center the founder of the feeding center (Sarita) had pretty much changed all the kids there. When the center started none of the kids would even make eye-contact with you, much less play with you. The other way I realized how much God can do was that God is helping Sarita keep all of the kids at the school and center alive through Sarita, the teachers, and the cooks. My other favorite part of spring break was getting to do Vacation Bible School at all of the feeding centers and that was one of the best parts of spring break because I love to see kids have fun. We did a Bible point and when someone said the point all of the kids had to yell “VIVA!” It was just really cool to see them smiling and having fun learning about God and Jesus! I hope you had a great spring break!
Sincerely,
Emilee Long

113. Spring Break Louisiana – Community UMC, Columbia

Spring Break

University of Missouri students from Community United Methodist Church, in Columbia, Missouri, served in New Orleans over spring break.  They worked on homes that were destroyed years ago by hurricane Katrina.  MissionCast caught up with three of the students at Community to listen to their experience.  Thank you to Liz Hinz, Sami Owen and Ben Rackets for sharing with us.  Tammy Shelton from Community also served on the team as one of the team leaders.  They report that it is estimated that mission teams will be needed for the next 18 years to complete the cases that are still open and are needing attention.
If you are interested in serving in this way contact Audrey Phelps, at the Office of Creative Ministries.  (phelps@umocm.com / 573-474-7155)
Thanks to the many Missouri college students that we learned about on facebook, and from whom we requested permission to use their pictures, who also spent spring break on this project that was planned by Beverly Boehmer and the Missouri Collection Connection.

112. Easter at the State Fairgrounds – First UMC, Sedalia

Easter

First United Methodist Church in Sedalia worshiped in the Missouri State Fair Mathewson Exhibition Center in order to open their doors to the county.  They met there because their two campuses could not hold all they anticipated attending.  Plus they wanted those who are would not enter a church building on Easter to be comfortable joining in.  MissionCast was on hand to bring you this collage of the Easter worship service.  We interviewed Rev. Jim Downing the day before while volunteers from the church were setting up for the next days service.  About 400 volunteers from the church were employed in various ways to make the move to the State Fairgrounds possible.
