111. Spring Break Students Feed the Hungry

Socity of St. Andrew

Students from campus ministry groups all over the country spent their spring break serving people.  Wesley Foundation students from Missouri served rebuilding homes in Louiaiana.  MissionCast this week follows a group of students from Virgina who spent spring break in Florida gleaning food for the hungry, through the Society of St. Andrew. Jeff Baker, at the Office of Creative Ministries, serves as the Missouri Hunger Advocate for the Society of St. Andrew.  Contact Jeff to find out how to set up a gleaning project for your congregation. Tons of food that would otherwise be thrown away are gleaned each year to make their way to the tables of hungry men, women and children.  For information contact Jeff Baker at 573-474-7155 or email him at baker@umocm.com.

110. Cassville UMC Partners With The Maratane UMC

Maratane Church

The Cassville United Methodist Church has had a covenant partner relationship with the United Methodist Church in the Maratane Refugee Camp in northern Mozambique since 2004.  In 2006 the church sent a Volunteers in Mission team to visit their partner church in Mozambique and another team will head to Maratane in 2009.  Besides their faithful pray support and the $990 per year covenant partner financial support they have an active pen pall program and at times have sent childrens books, Bibles and soccer balls.

In 2005 they raised money to build a new church building which has since replaced the building you see on this page.

To become a partner church with a church in Mozambique contact the Missouri Conference Mozambique Initiative Coordinator, Carol Kreamer, at 636-271-4455 or cpkreamer@hughes.net.

109. April Is Pass On The Gift Month – Heifer International

woman and goat

Now in its 65th year, Heifer International has used livestock and training to help millions of families lift themselves out of poverty and then watched them Pass On the Gift of their new skills and offspring of their animals to other needy families, transforming entire communities.

This April, Heifer is inviting everyone, churches, schools and individuals to take part in a truly global event honoring those millions of examples of success.

During the month of April, over 200 Pass On the Gift ceremonies will be celebrated in towns and villages around the world – from Nepal to Uganda to Poland to Ecuador.  Heifer families will pass on dairy cows, dairy goats, alpacas, and water buffalo as well as worms, trees and bees and other animals to help new families start on the road to self-reliance.

So we invite you to join in the celebration by hosting an educational and fund raising event at your church or in your home or at a nearby coffee shop with neighbors, family and friends.  Heifer has provided lots of resources to make it easy!  A booklet filled with ideas also contains a CD with multiple clips that tell the story about Heifer’s work.  All resources are free.  Heifer’s website at www.heifer.org   is another rich source of material with games, free downloads and even an option for posting your event on a map.

So please join us in this celebration by passing on your gifts and sharing with others.  With your contributions, Heifer will be able to provide hope and a new way of life to the millions of families who still struggle on a daily basis.  Please join us in this effort to expand the network of hope, dignity and self-reliance around the world.

For more information or to learn more about Heifer’s free resources, contact Carol Oliver at 573-881-6330 or by e-mail at oliver@umocm.com .

108. The Year of Shalom – Kirkwood United Methodist Church

Children's Choir

Like thousands of other Missouri United Methodists around the state, Loren and Karen Ahaus enthousiastically reached out to their community as a part of their church’s outreach ministry.  They are members of Kirkwood United Methodist Church.  Kirkwood has launched an intensive year-long outreach program with the Shalom House, in their St. Louis neighborhood.  Shalom House is a women’s shelter.  During the year they seek to involve as many church members as possible.  All kinds of ways to serve are being offered to their members.  For this MissionCast we interview,Loren and Karen Ahaus, who responded to the request of discovering ways to better utilize and organize the receptionist area at Shalom House.

(MissionCasts are indexed by topic.  Click here to view the entire MissionCast library)

Children's Choir

Under the direction of Lori Borger, the Manchester United Methodist Church Music Makers Childrens Choir, presented “A Technicolor Promise”, by Allen Pote.  On Sunday morning the channel was transformed into Noah’s Ark.  The musical was presented as a benefit for Heifer International.  The children set the goal of filling a Heifer International ark.  Carol Oliver, from the Office of Creative Ministries, who serves as the Missouri Representative for Heifer International, told the congregation about the amazing ministry carried out by Heifer staff and volunteers the world over.  Senior Pastor Carl Schenck was sure that the children’s goal of raising the $5,000 needed for an ark would be met and surpassed.  Sunday was a wonderful celebration of the Biblical Drama and of giving hope to hungery people around the world.  MissionCast was on hand to bring you this collage from the musical.
